Market Place

After the fall of the “Heaven’s Gate” and the city wall at the beginning of the 18th century and the town expansion to the east, in due course this site became the “lower market place”. The present fountain made of Lahn marble had at least two predecessors, which had quickly proven inadequate for the large population of the new town. Floods occurred quite often and a gap in the originally closed group of houses to the north had to be made in order to provide an escape path for floodwater.
